Answers to common questions about using the directory.
Is this free for families?
Yes, always free. We never charge families to browse the directory, filter listings, or contact operators. Our only revenue comes from optional featured listings paid by operators.
How do I contact a home?
Click the phone number on any listing to call directly. There's no form to fill out, no middleman, and no one collecting your contact information. You call; the operator answers.
What is a board and care home?
A board and care home is a Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE) — a licensed, home-like setting with typically 6 to 15 residents who receive personal care assistance. They offer more personalized attention than a large assisted living facility and are regulated by the California Department of Social Services.
What is a substantiated allegation?
A substantiated allegation is a complaint filed with CDSS against a facility that was investigated during an inspection and confirmed to have occurred. Not all complaints are substantiated. Zero allegations does not guarantee a complaint was never filed — it means none were confirmed.
What does Medi-Cal accepted mean?
The facility accepts Medi-Cal (California's Medicaid program) as payment for room and board. Acceptance and availability can change — always contact the facility directly to confirm they are currently accepting Medi-Cal residents and that a bed is available.
What does Memory Care mean?
The facility is equipped and staffed to care for residents with dementia, Alzheimer's, or other memory-related conditions. This typically means secured common areas, trained staff, structured daily programming, and supervision to prevent wandering.
Why are some photos labeled "Example photo"?
Free listings use representative stock photos to show a general idea of what a board and care home looks like. Paid featured listings display verified real photos of the actual facility, taken on-site.
How do I get my home listed?
All CDSS-licensed homes in our coverage area are listed automatically from public data. To claim your listing, update your information, or upgrade to a featured listing, contact us and we'll set it up.
Is the data current?
We refresh our data periodically from CDSS, but there may be a lag. License status, phone numbers, and violation counts can change between updates. Always verify directly with the facility and on ccld.ca.gov.
